What we do - Vegetation

Vegetation

East Sussex Highways look after a wide range of vegetation including highways trees and grass verges.

Managing vegetation is a part of our regular maintenance work and includes:

  • Pruning vegetation on East Sussex Highways owned land to prevent obstructions or safety issues
  • Pruning vegetation to maintain visibility, for example at junctions, and prevent them obscuring road signs, street lighting and other services equipment
  • Removal of dead, diseased or dying highways trees that may pose a risk to public safety
  • Highway verge grass cutting and weed spraying

If a private tree is overgrown and causing a problem to the highway, our Highway Steward will inspect and assess the impact being caused. We can take a range of actions from issuing a responsibilities letter, a tree cutting notice, formal notice, or arranging for emergency works to be carried out. We can also forward this to our Enforcement Team to take action if our requests are not followed.

Unfortunately, we cannot assist with private trees overhanging other private properties.
