- The steel columns which will form part of the foundation for the retaining walls on both sides of the new bridge have been installed; this completes the sheet piling phase of the works.
- Works to move the ditch on the east side have also progressed.
What’s happening next
- We will be starting the bored piling installation phase of the works around mid-September. In this phase, we will be drilling holes about 30 metres deep into the ground, which will then be filled with reinforced concrete to form the foundation for the retaining walls. Construction of the main site compound continues into September.
West side of the river: The bored piling work starts and will continue for around 6 weeks.
East side of the river: While piling continues on the west, works on the ditch and road realignment will continue on the east side.

Impact on you
Until the site compound is accessible, construction materials are being delivered directly to site more frequently than originally planned to allow the works to continue without delay.
Although there are no closures in place yet, these occasional construction vehicle movements can sometimes slow the traffic flow.
We expect these minor disruptions around site to continue throughout the autumn for the ongoing piling work. We kindly ask that people plan their journeys and give more time for travelling through the site to mitigate this.
Community engagement
- In partnership with Futures for All, three Jackson team members led a two-day workshop on 6th and 7th July for Year 10 students at Hailsham Academy. The sessions, attended by 35 students unable to secure placements during work experience week, offered valuable insights and exposure into careers in construction.
- Jacksons also donated 20 sleeping bags and £500 to Warming up the Homeless – Eastbourne Centre, to support their volunteer outreach events. This is part of our commitment to identify and support local charities during the scheme.
- Our monthly stakeholder meeting was held on Wednesday 26 August to share our progress and discuss concerns, after which we shared the updates with stakeholders who could not attend.
Key dates
- Throughout Autumn 2026 – Piling works continue
- End of September 2026 – Next stakeholder meeting
