The Exceat Bridge

Latest news

Tuesday 23 June 2026

  • Work on the Exceat Bridge site are now expected to begin at the end of June. We have started setting up our site offices and storage areas, and some construction materials are already being delivered to site.
  • During early excavation works at the site compound, we found archaeological artefacts. This means further investigations are required to make sure any important historical items are safely recovered and preserved. Read more about the archaeological works in this press release
  • As the project gets underway, we will begin some initial work to prepare the site for building the new bridge.

What's happening next?

West side of the river

Earthwork activities will start on the west side of the Cuckmere River to create a stable platform for the bridge foundation work, which is due to begin in July.

East side of the river

Work will start on adjusting the existing ditch to its new alignment, followed by earthworks to prepare the area for installation of long steel sheet piles driven into the river bank to form a retaining wall either side of the river (piling works)

How are you affected?

These activities are expected to cause very little disruption to the public, as they will be carried out away from the main road. However, you may notice some increased movement of construction vehicles as we bring in and take away materials from site.

There are no planned road closures this year, but there will be some disruption as heavy machinery and materials are transported onto the site under specific road movement orders. We will share more details about this in advance.

Community engagement

In our initial meeting at Seaford Town Council Chambers in May, we talked with local stakeholders about the planned works and how we plan to keep everyone informed about traffic plans, progress updates, and any changes to our schedule, which may occur as we review the programme.

Our next meeting will be at the end of July, where we will provide information to key stakeholders on how the project is going once there has been significant activity to update on. Details will be sent to those on our mailing list once confirmed.

We also highlighted our commitment to helping local people find employment and to encouraging young people’s interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). We will be working with the East Sussex Employability and Skills Team and the East Sussex Careers Hub to engage with local schools and communities throughout the project.

As work continues, we will share highlights of our community engagement activities in the newsletters to keep you updated.
