Your guide to hazard reporting

Title Page

Our highway network is crucial for the economic growth of the county and ensures communities stay safe and well connected.

As a partnership between Balfour Beatty Living Places and East Sussex County Council, we maintain roads, pavements, drainage systems, streetlights and bridges, among other assets.

We also provide winter gritting services and implement highway improvement schemes to keep everything running smoothly.

Risk based Asset Management & Maintenance

We prioritise hazardous defects and invest in preventative maintenance to stop issues before they grow.

We use condition surveys, safety inspections and public reports to decide where to act.

This evidence-led approach targets the right repair at the right time, reducing repeat visits and whole-life costs.

More details on our asset management approach can be found here.

Safety is our top priority

Our dedicated Highways Stewards thoroughly assess road and pavement defects and their potential risk.

Guided by our Intervention Levels, they evaluate each defect based on its location and the condition of the surrounding area. Any defects that pose a hazard are prioritised and made safe without delay, because your safety is our responsibility.

When we make repairs

Intervention levels help us prioritise issues based on their safety risk. Here’s our general guidance:

  • Defects deeper than 100mm and least 300mm wide - repaired within 2 hours.
  • Defects deeper than 60mm and at least 300mm wide - repaired within 5 days.
  • Defects deeper than 40mm and at least 300mm wide - repaired within 28 days.

You can find more information on our intervention levels here.

You’re our eyes and ears on the network! Spot a pothole? Let us know. Your report helps us keep East Sussex's highways network safe for everyone.
