For the final week of our June structures spotlight, we’re looking at the day-to-day bridge maintenance that happens behind the scenes across East Sussex.

Across the county, a dedicated ‘Bridge Gang’ carries out routine work on our bridges and structures - the smaller jobs that help keep everything safe, tidy and working as it should.

This includes:
-repairing and repainting parapets and safety fencing
-clearing culverts and drainage grids to keep water flowing
-removing debris, blockages and vegetation
-fixing minor brickwork and structural defects
-tidying structures and removing graffiti

This work is led by regular inspections from our Bridge Inspectors, who identify issues early so they can be addressed before they become bigger problems.

As part of this, the team also carries out planned “blockage patrols” at culverts across the network - helping reduce the risk of flooding by clearing debris and keeping drainage routes open.

While these jobs may be small in scale, they play an important role in maintaining the condition of our bridges and supporting safe and reliable journeys across the county.

It’s work that often happens behind the scenes, but it plays an important role in keeping East Sussex moving.
