This month, we’re shining a light on the different types of structures we maintain across East Sussex.
From parapets and railings to bridges, tunnels and other specialist assets that help keep people moving safely around the county. Each week, we’ll focus on a different area of this work, highlighting the repairs, inspections and maintenance that support everyday journeys behind the scenes.
This week, we’re looking at one of East Sussex’s most specialist assets - the Cuilfail Tunnel in Lewes.
Opened in 1980, the tunnel is a vital link from the A26 to the eastern side of Lewes, helping to reduce congestion through the historic centre. To keep it operating safely and efficiently, we carry out regular maintenance and inspections, including overnight closures every three months for thorough cleaning and safety checks.
During these closures, we wash down walls and cladding, sweep the road surface, and clear vegetation at the tunnel entrances. We also inspect and test critical systems, including lighting, ventilation and drainage, to maintain a safe environment and keep the structure in good condition.
By carrying out our work overnight, we minimise disruption while keeping the tunnel safe and reliable. It’s work you may never see, but it plays an essential role in keeping East Sussex moving safely every day.
Finally, we work closely with emergency services, including East Sussex Fire and Rescue, police and medical teams, supporting training exercises in the tunnel, so they’re prepared to respond effectively to incidents in a live traffic environment.
