Repair works on Bulverhythe Road, St Leonards have recently been completed, restoring a damaged footway and improving stability along the embankment.
This work was required after part of the embankment next to the retaining wall was gradually washed away by the Hollington Stream. Over time, this led to a section of the bank collapsing and the adjacent footway becoming unsafe.
A rebuild of the embankment and reinstatement of the footway was undertaken with specialist equipment and materials. This included a large crane to place rock filled bags into position within the stream. These are designed to help protect against erosion and provide a long-term solution.
While work was underway, some additional improvements were made nearby. Overgrown vegetation along the footway was cut back to make better use of the available space, and litter was cleared from the area.
Now the works are completed the riverbank can recover naturally, giving plants and habitats the space to establish and grow over time and these works will continue to support local wildlife, benefiting both water-based and riverside species.
Local residents showed interest in the work, stopping to speak to the team or watch the crane in operation. We thank you for your patience while these essential repairs were carried out.
