This June, we’re shining a light on the different types of structures we maintain across East Sussex.
From parapets and railings to bridges, tunnels and other specialist assets that help keep people moving safely around the county. Each week, we’ll be focusing on a different part of this work and sharing a closer look at the repairs, inspections and maintenance that often happen behind the scenes but play an important role in everyday journeys.
This week we're focusing on how we upgrade and repair parapets, railings and handrails, using examples from the last few weeks:
- Withyham Road, Hartfield – a refreshed post and rail parapet now clearly marks the edge of the watercourse and helps guide pedestrians safely along the route.
- Bishops Lane, Robertsbridge – railings at the junction have been restored, helping to maintain a safe boundary for road users.
- South Way, Newhaven – a new parapet has been installed along the underpass, providing a clear barrier alongside the footway.
- Spatham Lane, Ditchling – a replacement parapet is now in place, highlighting the edge of the watercourse and helping guide both pedestrians and drivers.
- Pett Level Road, Fairlight – a bridge parapet has been successfully replaced during overnight works, helping keep disruption to a minimum.
- Quarry Road steps, Hastings – the handrail has been renewed, providing better support for people using this well-used pedestrian route.
While these improvements may not always be the most visible, they play an important role in everyday journeys - helping guide people, define safe routes, and support the network as a whole.
We’ll be sharing more throughout June as we spotlight the different structures we maintain across the county.
