We're currently rolling out a longer lasting way to repair road defects, thanks to the introduction of an innovative mastic patching technique.

The mastic mix is made partly from recycled HGV tyres that creates a strong, flexible and waterproof seal over cracks, potholes and worn road surfaces. This not only improves durability but also helps prevent further deterioration, reducing the need for repeat visits.

One of the biggest advantages of mastic patching is its speed. The material sets quickly, allowing crews to complete repairs and reopen roads much sooner than with traditional methods. This helps keep traffic moving, minimises disruption for residents and businesses, and avoids lengthy closures wherever possible.

By incorporating recycled materials and reducing reliance on more resource‑intensive repairs, the technique supports our commitment to sustainability, cutting carbon emissions and reducing waste compared with conventional asphalt methods. Early results are extremely positive, with quality checks confirming the repairs are performing well across the network.

The approach is already enabling teams to cover more ground, respond quickly to emerging issues and deliver longer lasting results for road users, strengthening the resilience of the county’s road network while supporting a greener way of working.
