A major repair project has recently been completed at Longwood Bridge in Northiam after a passing vehicle struck the brick parapet, causing substantial structural damage.
The impact dislodged a large section of the parapet from its base, and on closer inspection it became clear that the damage extended along the full length of the structure. Due to the extent of the displacement and the risk of further collapse, engineers confirmed that the parapet could not be repaired in isolated sections. Instead, a full replacement was required to ensure the long‑term safety and stability of the bridge.
To carry out the work safely, a scaffold access platform was installed beneath the damaged parapet, allowing bricklayers and structural teams to operate securely above the watercourse. Because of the need for uninterrupted access and to protect both workers and road users, the road was temporarily closed while the repairs were undertaken.
Throughout the project, teams worked carefully to dismantle the unstable sections, rebuild the parapet to modern standards, and restore the bridge to a safe condition. The new structure has been designed and constructed to provide long‑lasting protection for all who use the route.
The repair works were completed successfully, and the bridge is now fully open again with the parapet replaced in its entirety.
We extend our thanks to the local community for their understanding and patience during the closure. These essential works were vital to ensuring the bridge remains safe and secure for years to come.
