Important investigation works were recently carried out on Church Lane in Lewes as part of ongoing efforts to assess and maintain key infrastructure beneath the road surface.

The works focused on reinforced concrete roof slabs located directly above privately owned garages positioned beneath the carriageway—an unusual structural arrangement that requires periodic inspection to ensure long‑term safety.

As part of these investigations, engineers completed three small trial holes: one located within the footway and two within the carriageway. These carefully controlled excavations allowed the team to examine the condition of the roof slab, assess the materials used in its construction, and gather essential information to support future maintenance planning. Specialist equipment was used to minimise disturbance to the surrounding areas and ensure that the investigations were carried out safely and efficiently.

The latest work builds on earlier exploratory investigations undertaken in August 2025, which provided initial insights into the depth of the concrete slabs, the supporting wall layout, and the types of materials present below the surface. This combination of surveys is crucial for building a detailed understanding of the structure, enabling engineers to plan maintenance activities based on accurate, up‑to‑date data.

These investigations form part of the early preparation for a significant project scheduled for March 2026, when the roof slabs will undergo full re‑waterproofing. Reinforced concrete structures require re‑waterproofing approximately every 25 years to prevent water from penetrating the concrete and causing the steel reinforcement inside to corrode. Without this work, the slabs could deteriorate over time, potentially compromising the strength of the structure and the safety of the road above.

By undertaking these surveys well in advance, the project team can ensure that the 2026 works are planned efficiently, minimising disruption for residents and road users while protecting the integrity of the underlying structure.

These proactive maintenance measures are part of ongoing efforts to keep Lewes’ road network safe, resilient, and well‑maintained for years to come.
