Pilley Farm Bridge, located near Rushlake Green, has received a significant upgrade this year as part of efforts to improve resilience, safety, and drainage ahead of the winter season. The well‑used rural bridge, which provides an important connection for local residents, had been experiencing issues linked to poor drainage and weather‑related wear, prompting a series of improvement works.

One of the key priorities for the project team was addressing the recurring flooding issues that affected the bridge during periods of heavy rainfall. To tackle this, we carried out a thorough clean of the existing drainage system and installed upgrades designed to help water flow more efficiently away from the road. These improvements will help reduce standing water on the approaches, improving safety for drivers and decreasing the risk of damage to the road surface.

In addition to drainage work, new fencing and verge markers were installed to enhance visibility along the bridge and its approach roads. These upgrades provide clearer guidance for motorists, especially during darker winter months or in adverse weather conditions. The enhanced visibility is expected to contribute to a safer and more predictable driving environment for all road users.

A further improvement involved strengthening the surrounding ground. Earth bags were used to form a reinforced retaining wall, offering stability and structural support to the site. To ensure the finished works blend naturally into the rural landscape, the earth bags were sprayed with a special seed mixture. This mixture bonds with the soil within the bags and encourages vegetation to establish, gradually forming a green, natural‑looking bank that fits seamlessly with the surrounding countryside.

To further improve safety on the bends and junctions near the bridge, high‑friction surfacing was laid. This specialist road surface provides extra grip, reducing the risk of skidding and helping vehicles maintain control in difficult driving conditions, particularly during wet or icy weather.

The combination of drainage upgrades, safety enhancements, structural reinforcement, and resurfacing means Pilley Farm Bridge is now much better equipped to withstand winter weather and provide a safer, more reliable route for those who rely on it.

We would like to extend a sincere thank you to the local community for their patience and cooperation while these essential works were carried out. Your support helped ensure the project could be completed efficiently and safely.
