Last month, essential safety improvements were carried out on Whitehouse Lane in Friars Gate, Crowborough, after inspections identified significant deterioration in the existing parapet. The ageing structure, which had become worn over time due to weathering and general use, was no longer providing the level of protection required for road users travelling along this rural route.
To address the issue and maintain the long-term safety of the road, the old parapet was carefully dismantled and removed. In its place, teams installed a completely new set of posts and rails, providing a stronger and more secure barrier along the edge of the watercourse. These upgrades were designed not only to restore the parapet’s structural integrity but also to bring it up to modern safety standards.
As part of the works, new verge markers were also added to help improve visibility for drivers, particularly during low‑light conditions or adverse weather. These small but important additions support safer navigation and help highlight roadside hazards before they are reached.
Due to the location of the parapet above a watercourse, a scaffold platform was required to allow us to work safely and effectively. For the protection of the workforce and members of the public, a road closure was put in place throughout the duration of the project. This ensured the repairs could be completed without risk to passing vehicles or pedestrians.
The works were finished successfully, with the new parapet now providing a secure, long‑lasting barrier for all who use the lane. The road has since reopened, and the area is once again fully accessible.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the local community for their patience and understanding while these vital safety improvements were carried out. Your cooperation helped ensure the works could be completed quickly and safely.
