Last month, essential repair works were carried out on Hurtis Hill in Crowborough after a section of embankment was damaged during a period of heavy rainfall. The force of fast‑moving water in the stream had gradually eroded the bank, washing away soil and weakening the structure that supports the road above. Without timely intervention, the damage could have worsened, potentially impacting drainage, increasing flood risk, and affecting the stability of the surrounding area.

To prevent further deterioration, we were deployed to rebuild and strengthen the affected embankment. The repairs focused on reinstating the washed‑out section, restoring proper water flow within the stream, and ensuring the embankment could continue to withstand future periods of severe weather. These works form part of ongoing efforts to maintain resilience in locations vulnerable to erosion and surface water damage.

While on site, we also took the opportunity to carry out additional maintenance in the surrounding area. Overgrown vegetation was cleared away to improve visibility and prevent plant roots from obstructing the flow of water, while nearby drains were cleaned to reduce the likelihood of blockages or flooding during future storms. This proactive approach helps protect the road network and minimises the chance of further disruption for residents and road users.

Access to the embankment required work from private land, and we would like to extend our sincere thanks to the local landowner, who kindly allowed us to pass through their garden. Their cooperation significantly improved efficiency on site and enabled the repair work to be completed safely and without unnecessary delay.

The embankment has now been fully restored, with the stream flowing freely once again and the surrounding area left in a much safer and more stable condition.
