As communities across the county gear up for the festive season; residents and event organisers are being reminded about the importance of keeping pedestrian guard rails (PGRs) free from unauthorised signage and decorations. With winter events, celebrations, and local activities in full swing, more posters, banners and notices often begin appearing around town centres and busy routes. While these displays are well‑intentioned, attaching items to PGRs can create safety issues for both pedestrians and road users.

Pedestrian guard rails are carefully installed at key locations to guide people safely along footways, prevent unsafe crossing movements, and improve visibility for drivers approaching junctions and pedestrian crossings. They form part of vital safety infrastructure designed to protect vulnerable road users, particularly in areas with heavy traffic or complex layouts.

However, when items such as commercial advertisements, community event posters, lost‑pet notices or even birthday banners are attached to the railings, they can obstruct sightlines that road users rely on. In some cases, large or brightly coloured items can become distractions to drivers. Smaller objects, meanwhile, can create snagging hazards or block the visibility of small children walking behind the barriers. Overloaded or poorly fixed items can also be caught by the wind, becoming loose and potentially blowing into the road.

These risks increase during winter months, when daylight hours are shorter and road conditions can be more challenging. Ensuring that PGRs remain completely clear helps keep everyone safer- including drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

While local teams are proud to support the many wonderful events taking place within the community at this time of year, they are urging organisers to use appropriate locations for notices and displays. Designated community noticeboards, shop windows, social media channels, and official event listings remain the best places to share information without compromising public safety.

Any unauthorised items placed on PGRs will be removed as part of routine safety checks. This ensures the barriers remain fully effective and visibility is not compromised for those using the roads and footways.

As the festive season gets underway, everyone’s cooperation is appreciated. These small steps help ensure that celebrations can be enjoyed safely, while keeping our streets and public spaces clear and secure for all.
