Essential repair works have recently been completed at Sprats Brook culvert on Eridge Road in Tunbridge Wells after a section of the footway collapsed earlier this year. The damage occurred when water began undermining the structural support beneath the footway and blocking a nearby gully, leading to water flowing over the path and creating a significant hazard for pedestrians.
The collapse made the route unsafe for anyone walking in the area, particularly during wet weather when surface water further reduced visibility and stability underfoot. Once the issue was identified, teams were quickly mobilised to assess the cause and carry out the necessary repairs to restore safe access.
We reconstructed the damaged concrete headwall, which plays an essential role in supporting the culvert and managing the flow of water beneath the footway. We also cleared the blocked gullies, allowing water to drain properly once again and reducing the risk of future flooding or erosion. The footway itself was repaired and reinstated, ensuring it is both secure and level for pedestrians.
In addition to repairing the immediate damage, we undertook a thorough clean of the surrounding area, removing debris and sediment that had built up around the culvert. This proactive maintenance helps keep the drainage system functioning efficiently and reduces the likelihood of similar issues recurring in the future.
The works were carried out efficiently and with careful consideration for local residents and road users. Disruption was kept to a minimum, and the footway was reopened as soon as it was safe to do so, restoring a key pedestrian link along Eridge Road.
The area is now much safer and more accessible for everyone, with improved drainage, strengthened infrastructure, and a fully restored footway providing greater resilience ahead of future periods of heavy rainfall.
