The Newhaven Swing Bridge, opened in 1974, is a vital link for Sussex’s residents, businesses, and commuters.
Did you know, it’s the third crossing at this site, following a wooden drawbridge (1784) and a manually operated bridge (1866).
Prioritising maritime traffic, it opens for every passing vessel. The structure was last refurbished in 1998, with major upgrades planned soon, including repainting and control tower improvements. Our expert team maintains the bridge daily, swiftly resolving issues to minimise disruption. We also work closely with the Port Authority to ensure smooth operations. For 50 years, this bridge has supported both road and marine traffic.
