We're continuing to make good progress on our bridge maintenance project.
Since temporarily lifting the bridge using specialist jacking equipment, our teams have been carrying out a range of essential repairs that can only take place while the structure is supported. This has included removing ageing components, preparing areas of the bridge for replacement parts, carrying out concrete alterations and installing new bridge bearings.
Bridge bearings are a key part of the structure. They help transfer the weight of traffic safely through the bridge while allowing it to move naturally as temperatures change.
The temporary 40mph speed limit remains in place to support the safe delivery of these works. Lower vehicle speeds help reduce the impact of traffic on the bridge while temporary support systems are being used and provide a safer environment for site teams and construction vehicles accessing the work area.
This essential maintenance will help keep the bridge safe and reliable for the thousands of journeys made across it each day.
The project is expected to continue until January 2027, and the temporary traffic management measures will be removed as soon as they are no longer needed.
Thank you for your patience while we carry out these important improvements.
