Our Structures Maintenance team has successfully completed essential repairs to the brickwork retaining wall in Maresfield, located below Bonners Church of England Primary School.
The retaining wall supports the steep embankment and footway above, making it an important part of the local highway network. Missing stonework and areas of deteriorated mortar had been identified and required repair to help maintain the stability of the structure and ensure the continued safety of highway users.
The works involved carefully removing defective mortar and repointing joints throughout the stonework, as well as installing replacement stone in areas where sections were missing. These repairs have restored the integrity of the wall while preserving the character of the existing structure.
The scheme was delivered within a constrained roadside environment and was carefully planned to minimise disruption. Appropriate traffic management and safety controls were implemented throughout the works to protect the workforce, pedestrians, road users and the neighbouring school community, while maintaining a tidy and well-managed site.
During the project, the team also identified and cleared a blocked drainage pipe located in front of the wall. Completing this additional work under the existing lane closure enabled the team to proactively maintain surrounding assets and avoid the need for a return visit, reducing disruption for local residents and road users.
