What is street furniture?
The term ‘Street furniture’ refers to objects and equipment installed on the highway for various purposes. These items are often to provide comfort, convenience, or safety for pedestrians and motorists.
Common examples include:
- benches
- signage
- bus shelters
- letter boxes
- plant pots
Who is responsible for street furniture?
Some objects on the highway are maintained by private residents or Parish Councils. Below is what East Sussex Highways are responsible for:
- Most streetlights - some are maintained by local councils. For more info, see what we do- Street Lighting.
- All information signage, including those that provide warnings and regulate traffic
- All traffic signals, including pedestrian crossings
- Traffic counting devices, such as traffic counter boxes and counter strips on roads
- Some reflective posts and bollards (except those owned by private homeowners)
- Some salt bins (many are managed by parish councils or residents’ groups)
