Map showing location of works

Balfour Beatty is working in partnership with East Sussex County Council to manage the highways service across East Sussex. As part of this, we will be carrying out traffic signal improvements at the junction of Winterbourne Hollow, Brighton Road and Western Road, Lewes.

This work forms part of a county wide programme of replacement for sites that have reached the point of uneconomical repair or have parts that can no longer be replaced.

When do they start?

Work will be carried out from Monday 17 March 2025 to Friday 2 May 2025 between 8am and 4pm.

We will inform you of any changes to the dates or times via advanced warning signs on site.

What are we doing?

These works involve removing the current traffic signals, followed by the installation of new, upgraded signals.

We are also working collaboratively with other departments to reduce disruption to road users. Whilst on site, we will be replacing the street lighting, cleaning and repairing drainage, and inspecting the road surface for any required repairs. This will remove the need for any further disruptions in the future.

How will this impact highway users?

The team will be working at the junction of Winterbourne Hollow, the A277, A275 and Western Road.

The junction will remain open with four-way temporary traffic lights in place. An alternative pedestrian crossing will also be in place.

The temporary traffic signals will be manually controlled between 7am and 7pm, 7 days per week to minimise disruption at this busy junction.

Information for residents and businesses

Parking: We will put out ‘no parking’ signs and cones on the site to advise where parking is restricted. Please avoid parking in these locations as it will delay our work.

Public transport: Bus stops on A277 outside and opposite Lewes Prison will be suspended, with alternative stops provided.

Weather: All of these works are subject to favourable weather conditions, for example heavy rain may affect the progress of the works.

Properties close to the carriageway may experience a temporary disturbance as this can be a noisy process. There may also be flashing lights and reversing sirens.

We would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience or disruption this work may cause, however this forms part of our continuing improvement for the East Sussex highway network.

Please let us know how we did by leaving feedback. Please note you will be redirected to the East Sussex County Council consultation website.
