Balfour Beatty is working in partnership with East Sussex County Council to manage the highways service across East Sussex. As part of this, we will be carrying out repairs to the footway and carriageway on Victoria Avenue, Hastings.

What does the work involve?

The footway and carriageway need to be reinstated to their original condition following damage caused by badger setts. Prior to starting this work, due to their legally protected status, it is necessary to ensure that the badgers have left the setts and will not return.

Temporary traffic signals and a footway closure will be implemented for approximately 80 metres between the footpath steps and ‘Sunbeam Cottages’ from Monday 3 November to Wednesday 10 December 2025. This will allow us to carry out measures to exclude the badgers from the area, so you may not see much activity on site. After a monitoring period, the reinstatement work will start. Any alterations to the scheduled dates or times will be communicated through advance warning signs posted on site.

Specialist equipment will be installed to prevent badgers from entering the area. Please be aware, tampering with this equipment will delay the repairs.  At all times, we will be following a strict legal process to protect the badgers.

Information for residents and businesses

Parking: We request that vehicles are not parked in the area between the steps and the ‘Sunbeam Cottages” as we will need this area to work.  We will put out ‘no parking’ signs and cones on the site to advise where parking is restricted so the area will be extremely sensitive.

Weather: All of these works are subject to favourable weather conditions, for example heavy rain may affect the progress of the works.

Properties close to the carriageway may experience a temporary disturbance as this can be a noisy process and those properties may experience flashing lights and reversing sirens.

We would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience or disruption this work may cause, however this forms part of our continuing improvement for the East Sussex highway network. Should you have any concerns regarding these works, you can contact us at eshcomms@balfourbeatty.com.

Please let us know how we did by leaving feedback. Please note you will be redirected to the East Sussex County Council consultation website.
