Map of works area
Balfour Beatty is working in partnership with East Sussex County Council to manage the highways service across East Sussex. As part of this, we’ll soon be carrying out improvement work at the junction of Station Approach, Devonshire Road and Havelock Road, Hastings.
Once completed, these works will improve pedestrian safety at this busy junction.
When do they start?
Work will be carried in phases between Tuesday 26 May and Friday 25 September 2026.
These dates have been chosen to cause the least amount of disruption to the East Sussex College campus.
We will inform you of any changes to the above dates or times via advanced warning signs on site, as well as our social media channels and website.
What are we doing?
The improvements aim to enhance access to the public transport hub by:
- improving pedestrian refuges and crossing islands,
- upgrading traffic signals,
- widening existing footways - as well as resurfacing,
- carriageway resurfacing and high friction surfacing,
- drainage adjustments,and
- street lighting improvements.
How will this impact highway users?
We’ll be working in the below phases:
From Tuesday 26 May there will be temporary traffic signals in place 24 hours a day for a period of 14 weeks. During this period, we will be carrying out the majority of the works, including, paving and resurfacing footways, installing new pedestrian refuge islands, drainage adjustments and associated acitivites such as kerbing and pedestrian guard rail adjustments.
From Monday 31 August overnight road closures will be in place between 8pm and 6am while we carry out carriageway reconstruction and resurfacing.
During these closures, traffic will be diverted via Cornwallis Terrace, Baybrook Road and South Terrace.
This diversion route is not suitable for HGVs or large vehicles. An alternative diversion will be in place via the A21 and A2101 St Helens Road.
