Update: 25 August 2026
Good progress is now being made on our improvements. Works at Bethune Way now complete, and works on St Helen's Road are also nearing completion. The new pedestrian crossing features have all been installed, and all traffic management has been removed from the road.
A small amount of work is still required to fully complete the scheme:
Street lighting improvements
We still need to replace approximately 25 street lighting lanterns along St Helen's Road. These works are currently being programmed and are expected to require temporary stop-and-go traffic management while they are carried out.
In addition, a street lighting column on Ashford Road is due to be replaced on the evening of 8 September 2026. This work will take one night to complete and will require temporary traffic management and a bus stop suspension.
Road resurfacing
To complement the new pedestrian crossing improvements, resurfacing works are planned at the existing zebra crossing on St Helen's Road at the junction with Dordrecht Way.
These works are scheduled to begin on 28 September 2026 and are expected to take four nights to complete. The road will be closed overnight, with a signed diversion route in place, but will reopen during the day.
We are also planning to carry out resurfacing at the junction of St Helen's Road and Parkstone Road. Dates for these works have not yet been confirmed. The works will take place at night and will require temporary road closures on both roads.
Further updates will be provided here once dates for the remaining works have been confirmed.
Balfour Beatty is working in partnership with East Sussex County Council to manage the highways service across East Sussex. As part of this, we’ll soon be carrying out improvement work on St Helens Road, Hastings.
Once completed, these works will improve pedestrian access to Alexandra Park.
When do they start?
Work will be carried out in a number of phases, starting on Wednesday 29 April 2026. We will inform you of any changes to dates or times via advanced warning signs on site, as well as our social media channels and website.
What are we doing?
The improvements aim to enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility to Alexandra Park by:
- upgrading four existing pedestrian crossings,
- widening refuges and build-outs to reduce the crossing distance for pedestrians,
- installing a new pedestrian crossing at the junction of Ashford Road,
- resurfacing and lining the carriageway at the existing zebra crossing near the junction of Dordrecht Way,
- adjusting the pedestrian route on the Bethune Way roundabout to offer a shorter route across the road with greater visibility of incoming traffic, and
- improving street lighting at each crossing point.
How will this impact highway users?
The team will be working between Parkstone Road and Bethune Way, starting at the Parkstone Road end. (Please check the top of this page for any updates on the phasing)
Information for residents and businesses
Parking: Some areas of on-street parking may be restricted for machinery and materials. This will be marked by no parking cones / barriers.
Bus service: Further information will be available from the service provider.
Weather: All of these works are subject to favourable weather conditions, for example heavy rain may affect the progress of the works.
Properties close to the carriageway may experience a temporary disturbance as this can be a noisy process and those properties may experience flashing lights and reversing sirens.
