Balfour Beatty is working in partnership with East Sussex County Council to manage the highways service across East Sussex. As part of this, we will be carrying out carriageway repairs on South Street, Eastbourne.
When do they start?
Works will be carried out from Monday 21 July to Friday 25 July 2025 between 8pm to 6am. We will inform you of any changes to the dates or times via advanced warning signs on site.
What are we doing?
These works involve carrying out maintenance on the carriageway, which includes patching damaged areas and also applying a layer of coloured, high-friction surface (HFS) material to certain sections to reduce the risk of skidding.
How will this impact highway users?
The team will be working from the junctions of the A259 Gildredge Road to Chiswick Place.
There will also be a lane closure outside ‘The Eagle’ pub.
Access will be restricted to residents while we are working, with traffic diverted via the College Road, Blackwater Road, Cornfield Terrace, Hyde Gardens, Gildredge Road, A259, Grove Road, Grange Road, Furness Road and vice versa. The traffic management will be removed outside of our working hours.
If you need vehicle access, please approach the closure point and speak to the site team. This is for access only and there will be no through route. There may be a slight delay while we make it safe for you to pass, and your vehicle is escorted by site marshalls. Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.
Information for residents and businesses
Parking: If required, we will put out ‘no parking’ signs and cones on the site to advise where parking is restricted. Please avoid parking in these locations as it will delay our works.
Weather: All of these works are subject to favourable weather conditions, for example heavy rain may affect the progress of the works.
Waste collection: Access will be granted for waste collection.
Public Transport: Local bus services have been informed of these works and will be diverted.
Properties close to the carriageway may experience a temporary disturbance as this can be a noisy process and those properties may experience flashing lights and reversing sirens.
We would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience or disruption this work may cause, however this forms part of our continuing improvement for the East Sussex highway network. Should you have any concerns regarding these works, you can contact us at eshcomms@balfourbeatty.com.
Please let us know how we did by leaving feedback. Please note you will be redirected to the East Sussex County Council consultation website.
