Balfour Beatty is working in partnership with East Sussex County Council to manage the highways service across East Sussex. As part of this, we will be carrying out essential bridge maintenance works on the Shinewater Bridge, Golden Jubilee Way, Eastbourne.

Once completed, these works will keep the bridge in it’s optimal condition and ensure the bridge remains safe for all users.

When do they start?

Work will be carried out over a period of 10 months, from Thursday 26 March 2025.

We will inform you of any changes to the dates or times via advanced warning signs on site.

What are we doing?

These works involve replacing bridge bearings and joints - vital components that allow the structure to move safely as temperatures change and traffic passes over it. Following detailed inspections, these elements have reached the end of their intended service life and are now being replaced as part of a proactive maintenance programme

How will this impact highway users?

The work has been carefully planned to minimise disruption, particularly given the bridge’s location over the railway and on the A22 into Eastbourne.  The majority of work will be carried out from underneath the structure with the road staying open to traffic.

There will be an overnight lane closure in place for one night on Thursday 26 and Friday 27 March to allow for the speed limit reduction to be installed.

The speed limit reduction will be in place until the works are completed in January 2027 for the safety road users and our team.

There will also be overnight lane closures in July and October 2026 to allow for the bridge to be raised and lowered safely, along with lane closures for the replacement of joints. Further information will be provided on this webpage and our social media channels.

Weather: All of these works are subject to favourable weather conditions, for example heavy rain may affect the progress of the works.

We would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience or disruption this work may cause, however this forms part of our continuing improvement for the East Sussex highway network.

Please let us know how we did by leaving feedback. Please note you will be redirected to the East Sussex County Council consultation website.
