Map of works area.

Balfour Beatty is working in partnership with East Sussex County Council to manage the highways service across East Sussex. As part of this we will be upgrading the zebra crossing on Sea Road near Bexhill Station, as well as carrying out carriageway and footway improvements.

Once completed, these works will improve pedestrian safety in the area.

When do they start?

Work will be carried out from Monday 22 June to Thursday 23 July 2026.

We will inform you of any changes to the dates or times via advanced warning signs on site.

What are we doing?

These improvements aim to improve pedestrian safety in the area by relocating and widening the existing zebra crossing in Sea Road, close to Endwell Road.

Work will also include carriageway patching, reconstruction of sections of the footway and minor drainage improvements to help manage surface water. Once complete, new road markings and updated signage will be installed to ensure the area is clearly laid out and safe for all road users.

How will this impact highway users?

We will be working on Sea Road between Station Road and St Leonards Road. To minimise disruption and ensure the works can be carried out safely and efficiently, the scheme will involve a combination of daytime and overnight working, each with different traffic management arrangements.

Monday 22 June to Thursday 23 July 2026, 6am-7pm weekdays only: The road will remain open with temporary traffic lights in place while we are working. A footway closure will be in place with a suitable alternative provided.

Friday 17 July to Thursday 23 July 2026, 7pm - 6am, weeknights only: Access will be restricted while we are working, with traffic diverted via the B2182, the A259, the B2098 & vice versa. There will also be a footway closure in place.

For access, please approach the closure point and speak to the site team. This is for access only and there will be no through route. There may be a short delay while we make it safe for you to pass, and your vehicle will be escorted by site marshals. Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.

Information for residents and businesses

Parking: We will put out ‘no parking’ signs and cones on the site to advise where parking is restricted. Please avoid parking in these locations as it will delay our works.

Weather: All of these works are subject to favourable weather conditions, for example heavy rain may affect the progress of the works.

Properties close to the carriageway may experience a temporary disturbance as this can be a noisy process and those properties may experience flashing lights and reversing sirens.

Business access will be maintained where feasible, in coordination with owners and required construction.

We would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience or disruption this work may cause, however this forms part of our continuing improvement for the East Sussex highway network.

Please let us know how we did by leaving feedback. Please note you will be redirected to the East Sussex County Council consultation website.
