Map of works area and diversion route
Balfour Beatty is working in partnership with East Sussex County Council to manage the highway service across East Sussex. As part of this, we will be carrying out resurfacing works on Pett Level Road, Pett.
Once completed, these works will help improve the condition of the road surface.
When do they start?
Work will be carried out between Monday 30 September 2024 and Friday 1 November 2024 between 7am and 7pm.
We will inform you of any changes to the dates or times via advanced warning signs on site.
What are we doing?
These works will predominantly involve carriageway surfacing, however, will also include, hedge cutting, ironwork repairs, layby & verge repairs, gully cleansing and road marking refreshments. The team will also be removing kerbing setts and refreshing the High Friction Surfacing (HFS) leading up to outside the Winchelsea Beach Cafe.
How will this impact highway users?
The team will be working from Chick Hill to Smugglers End Park. The works will be carried out in a phased approach, commencing at the Winchelsea end, moving along the road until it reaches Pett Level. Please see the below table for more information:

Access to the road will be restricted for residents for the duration of works. Traffic will be diverted via Pett Level Road, Sea Road, The Strand, Tanyard Lane, Ferry Hill, Robert's Hill, Rectory Lane, Sandrock Hill, A259, Main Road, Rye Road, Winchelsea Road, Friars Hill, Pett Road, Chick Hill and vice versa.
There is a separate for larger vehicles due to width restrictions on Chick Hill. Traffic will be diverted via Pett Level Road, Battery Hill, Fairlight Road, Old London Road, Rye Road, Winchelsea Road, Rye Road, Main Road, Sandrock Hill, Rectory Lane, Robert's Hill, Ferry Hill, Tanyard Lane, The Strand, Sea Road, Pett Level Road, Victoria Way and vice versa.
If you need vehicle access to your property, please discuss this with the team on-site. Please bear in mind there will be delays whilst the area is made safe, and your vehicle is escorted by site marshalls. Emergency access will be maintained at all times.
Please be advised, the road will be open outside of working hours, however there may be temporary traffic signals in place to protect equiptment.
Information for residents and businesses
Parking: We will put out ‘no parking’ signs and cones on the site to advise where parking is restricted. Please avoid parking in these locations as it will delay our work.
Weather: All of these works are subject to favourable weather conditions, for example heavy rain may affect the progress of the works.
Waste collection: Access will be maintained for waste collection vehicles.
Public transport: Shuttle buses have been put in place for essential services,such as schools. All other buses will be followting the diversion route.
Properties close to the carriageway may experience a temporary disturbance as this can be a noisy process and those properties may experience flashing lights and reversing sirens.
