Hamsey Road, Barcombe - Culvert repairs

Map of works area and diversion route

Map of works area and diversion route

Update: 18 February 2026

There is rapid deterioration at the site, creating a significant risk of further road and tree collapse, as well as complications caused by an exposed water main. The project therefore involves the full replacement of the culvert and headwalls, along with the removal of dangerous leaning trees and vegetation where required.

Access to private land — including properties adjacent to the works — is required for both construction activities and associated surveys. An ecological inspection and a topographical survey have already been planned to support the development of the scheme.

Although the road is already closed and no formal traffic management is required, pedestrians and cyclists continue to bypass the barriers, posing safety concerns. For now, pedestrians are still able to pass through the site. The damaged area has been safely fenced off, and a clearly marked pedestrian route has been set up to guide people through. We kindly ask that the designated route is followed and that fencing is left undisturbed so the area remains safe for everyone.

Once the main works begin, pedestrian access through the site will no longer be possible due to the scale and duration of the construction. A signed diversion route for pedestrians will be put in place at that time.

Topographical and geotechnical surveys still need to be undertaken, and ongoing coordination with the water utility provider is essential to manage the exposed water main, which may require isolation or diversion during construction.

We are currently developing an outline programme to support increasing stakeholder enquiries.

It has now been confirmed that the culvert will be upgraded and future‑proofed, with a flood assessment instructed by the client to support the design.

Several issues remain outstanding, including:

  • Final confirmation of land access
  • Commissioning of the required surveys
  • Finalisation of both the design and the programme
  • Acceleration of permitting
  • Continued stakeholder communication

Thank you for your patience.

Hamsey Road has recently been closed due to a collapsed culvert causing a large void in the carriageway. The road must remain closed for the safety of all road users.

As shared on social media, the road was closed on Wednesday 10 December 2025 to make the area safe. Regrettably, the repair in this location will be no easy fix as it’s likely that a new culvert and supporting headwall will be required.

We’re currently in the process of reviewing available budgets and formulating a plan of action, including a construction delivery programme, so repairs can be made and the road re-opened.

We’re working on a solution by designing and installing a new culvert. This requires a detailed design to be produced, including structural design of the new culvert and headwalls supporting the road, as well as water flow assessments to ensure the right size of culvert is provided to minimise the risk of similar issues occurring in future.

More information will be provided to you as progress is made and a date for construction has been confirmed. Please be rest assured that we are working to expedite a work programme so repairs can be carried out as soon as possible.

While the road remains closed, a diversion route is in place using Cooksbridge Road, Deadmantree Hill, A275, The Drove, North End Lane, Hamsey Lane and vice versa. This route has been designed to avoid the bridge on Church Road as this is weight restricted to 7.5 tonnes, meaning it is not suitable for HGVs and should not be loaded with excessive traffic. Please see the map for the diversion information.
