Map of works area and diversion route
Balfour Beatty is working in partnership with East Sussex County Council to manage the highways service across East Sussex. As part of this, we will carrying out bridge repairs at Gatehouse Bridge, Underhill, Maresfield to repair the headwall and railings.
Regrettably, the reconstruction has been delayed so works can take place when water levels are lower. We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused during this time.
When do they start?
Work will take place from Monday 7 October 2024 to Friday 1 November 2024.
We will inform you of any changes to the dates or times via advanced warning signs on site.
What does the work involve?
These works involve rebuilding the headwall that collapsed last year. The headwall supports the retaining wall and embankment surrounding the bridge.
How will this impact highway users?
The team will be working at the Gatehouse Bridge.
Vehicle access to the road will remain restricted for the duration of the works, however further restrictions will be implemented for pedestrians. This is due to the limited safe working space in the area. Safety is our priority, and restricting pedestrian access will enable us to keep both our staff and road users safe.
Traffic will be diverted via Straight Half Mile, High Street, School Hill, A272 Budletts Lane, Millwood Lane and vice versa.
If you need vehicle access, please discuss this with the team on site. Please bear in mind there will be delays whilst the area is made safe and your vehicle is escorted by site marshals. Access to emergency vehciles will be maintained at all times.
Information for residents and businesses
Parking: If required, we will put out ‘no parking’ signs and cones on the site to advise where parking is restricted. Please avoid parking in these locations as it will delay our works.
Weather: All of these works are subject to favourable weather conditions, for example heavy rain may affect the progress of the works.
Properties close to the carriageway may experience a temporary disturbance as this can be a noisy process and those properties may experience flashing lights and reversing sirens.
