Downsview Crescent, Uckfield - Carriageway Repairs

Balfour Beatty is working in partnership with East Sussex County Council to manage the highways service across East Sussex. As part of this, we will be carrying out carriageway repairs in Downsview Crescent, Uckfield.

As you may be aware, contractors working for Uckfield College were required to undertake road and other repairs due to damage caused by the construction traffic associated with the college development. However, when considering these repairs, it has been identified that it would be beneficial for East Sussex County Council to undertake wider and more extensive repairs using our contractors, Balfour Beatty Living Places, working on our behalf as East Sussex Highways.

What are we doing?

Some interim pothole repairs were conducted earlier this year to address the immediate safety issues, however, we now plan to carry out road resurfacing works and crack and joint repairs to Downsview Crescent. We will also be carrying out repairs to some of the footways and drainage assets and, refreshing/replacing the road markings including the ‘School Slow’ red gateways.

The below image shows the sections of the roads that will be resurfaced and where crack and jointing works will be undertaken. The type of repair is determined by the level of deterioration and the makeup of the road. By managing the asset in this way, we ensure best value is delivered. A follow up dressing treatment will be undertaken in around 3 years’ time, providing a uniform finish throughout.

The Southview Drive section will be deferred until the completion of housing development, due for completion autumn 2024. By doing so, we ensure the planned carriageway works on Downsview Crescent are not affected.

When we will be doing the repairs?

We had hoped to deliver these works during the school summer holidays but as the scope of works is now more extensive, and several specialist resources are needed, it has not been possible to arrange the works for this time. Both phases will require the closure of the road with the first phase adjacent to the school and college undertaken during the October half term holiday to minimise disruption. The second phase will continue after the half term holiday.

Access during the repairs

Residents will usually be able to access properties during the works but will need to liaise with the on-site team to agree times, as well as access and egress routes on the day. Please also liaise with the on-site team if you have any appointments or deliveries during this time. Refuse collections will also be accommodated by agreement with the local collection team and access for emergency vehicles will be supported at all times.

We would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience or disruption this work may cause, however this forms part of our continuing improvement for the East Sussex highway network.

Please let us know how we did by leaving feedback. Please note you will be redirected to the East Sussex County Council consultation website.
