We’ll soon be carrying out carriageway improvements on Devonshire Place, Eastbourne.
When do they start?
Work will be carried out from Sunday 31 May 2026 to Friday 5 June 2026, 24 hours a day.
We will inform you of any changes to the dates or times via advanced warning signs on site.
What are we doing?
These works involve reinforcing and resurfacing the carriageway. We will also be carrying out high friction surfacing (HFS), ironwork adjustments and road marking refreshments, to improve overall safety to road users.
How will this impact highway users?
Works will take place between Grand Parade and the Memorial Roundabout, in the following phases:
Phase 1: Sunday 31 May 2026, 7pm – work will start on the northbound carriageway only, until 5pm Tuesday 2 June 2026. To reduce the duration of disruption, the road will remain closed 24 hours a day.
Phase 2: Tuesday 2 June 2026, 6pm – works will resume on the southbound carriageway only, until 5pm Friday 5 June 2026. To reduce the duration of disruption, the road will remain closed 24 hours a day.
The road will be closed to through traffic, please follow the signed diversion routes.

For safety reasons, we are unable to provide access to properties on the side of the road where works are taking place due to excavations in the carriageway. Access for residents and businesses will be maintained from the opposite side of the road only.
During our working hours, there will be no through route within the closure area. If you require vehicle access via the open side, please speak to the site team, as arrangements may change as work progresses.
Please be aware that short delays may occur while the area is made safe, and vehicles may need to be escorted by site marshals. Pedestrian access will be maintained.
Please be polite and respectful to the site teams, they are working to keep everyone safe.
Information for residents and businesses
Parking: If required, we will put out ‘no parking’ signs and cones on the site to advise where parking is restricted. Please avoid parking in these locations as it will delay our works.
Bus service: Local bus services have been informed of these works and will be diverted.
Waste collection: Arrangements have been made for any waste collection.
Weather: All of these works are subject to favourable weather conditions, for example heavy rain may affect the progress of the works.
Properties close to the carriageway may experience a temporary disturbance as this can be a noisy process and those properties may experience flashing lights and reversing sirens.
We would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience or disruption this work may cause, however this forms part of our continuing improvement for the East Sussex highway network.
Please let us know how we did by leaving feedback. Please note you will be redirected to the East Sussex County Council consultation website.
