Seaford Road A259
We’re pleased to inform you that, starting Tuesday 1 September 2026, we’ll be carrying out improvements in Mount Road, Avis Road, Seaford Road and The Drove as part of a wider Bus Service Improvement Plan taking place across the county.
These works are expected to be completed by the end of November 2026. Works will be carried between 7am and 6pm weekdays. There will be a week of night closures near the end of the project to carry out resurfacing works, further details will be added here as the project progresses.
What are we doing?
This scheme provides benefits of improved journey time for buses, upgraded safety for pedestrians and improves visibility for all users.
The improvement include:
- A westbound bus lane on the A259 Seaford Road
- An enhanced bus interchange area in Mount Road with improved pedestrian facilities
- A new bus lane exiting from the roundabout at the junction of Avis Road and the A259, designed to assist traffic flow and access to the bus interchange area
- Street lighting and traffic signal upgrades
- Carriageway reconstruction and surfacing, including a new bus entrance to the interchange area
- Footway reconstruction and kerbing
- Improvements to pedestrian crossings
- Drainage replacements
- New bus shelters and Real Time Passenger Information boards

To help keep traffic moving and maintain access for pedestrians and road users wherever possible, we’ll be working in a series of phases. This allows the improvements to be delivered safely while minimising disruption.
Phase 1 – the first stage of the project will include improvements in the A259 Seaford Road, Mount Road and Avis Road area. Work will take place in several areas at the same time and will include construction of the new bus lane, new bus stops and improved interchange facilities, as well as traffic signal improvements.
Phase 2 – once Phase 1 is complete, we’ll move to the next stage, which will focus on completing the remaining bus lane improvements, landscaping and public realm enhancements.
Phase 3 – the final main stage of the project will require the temporary closure of the Mount Road bus loop. This will allow completion of the central bus interchange, final road connections, traffic signal infrastructure, footways, cycle facilities and landscaping.
Diversion routes and temporary traffic management measures will be put in place for the safety of both road users and the workforce.
Additional works – some smaller improvement works may be carried out at various points throughout the construction programme, including resurfacing works, installation and relocation of signs and vegetation clearance.
Overnight resurfacing – some resurfacing works will need to be completed during night-time road closures. Carrying out these activities overnight helps reduce disruption to daytime traffic and public transport services.
Advance notice of any closures will be provided via site signage, social media and the website, with signed diversion routes will be in place where required.
Landscaping and planting – ground preparation and other landscaping activities may be carried out during construction. However, permanent planting and seeding will take place during the next suitable planting season, expected in March 2027, to give plants the best possible chance to establish and thrive.
Please be polite and respectful to the site teams, they are working to keep everyone safe.
Information for residents and businesses
Local businesses: all businesses will remain open as usual, and our team on site will be able to assist with any access concerns.
Accessibility: please follow signage for access while we are working on crossings and footways to keep everyone safe.
Parking: if required, we will put out ‘no parking’ signs and cones on the site to advise where parking is restricted. Please avoid parking in these locations as it will delay our works.
Bus service: during the initial phase the buses will continue unaffected. Once the new bus gate has been constructed the buses that currently use the bus loop will then be diverted to this new location.
Weather: all of these works are subject to favourable weather conditions, for example heavy rain may affect the progress of the works.
Properties close to the carriageway may experience a temporary disturbance as this can be a noisy process and those properties may experience flashing lights and reversing sirens.
