Balfour Beatty is working in partnership with East Sussex County Council to manage the highways service across East Sussex. As part of this, we will be carrying out improvement works to bus station in Bell Walk, Uckfield.

When do they start?

Works will take place from Monday 5 August 2024 to Thursday 24 October 2024 between 7am and 7pm. We will inform you of any changes to the dates or times via advanced warning signs on site.

What are we doing?

These works involve footway and carriageway improvements to create a Mobility Hub for the whole community.

The team will be carrying out both footway and carriageway treatments, including kerbing and paving to match High Street. New crossing points and footway will also be constructed.

Other works include:

  • Installation on two new shelters and one cycle shelter, with living vegetation roofs to aid biodiversity,
  • Increasing capacity to accommodate four buses,
  • Real time passenger information signage,
  • Upgraded street lighting and street furniture.

To enable the new bus station to operate efficiently, changes to parking restrictions will be implemented. A public consultation was held and advertised earlier this year. More information and plans of the proposals can be found here.

How will this impact highway users?

Monday 5 – Friday 9 August: Minimal disruption to road users during crossing point installation.

Monday 12 August – Thursday 24 October: The bus station will be closed between the B2102 Bell Lane and Bell Walk for construction of the new Mobility Hub and carriageway surfacing.

Monday 7 October – Thursday 10 October: A southbound lane closure will be in place between the (Tescos) roundabout on Bell Lane and Bell Walk. Diversion route for all vehicles will be via the B2102 Bellfarm Road, Brookside and Bell Lane. Buses, accessing the temporary bus stop in Bell Lane, will be diverted via the bus station. *Please note that the bus station will not be open to passengers during this time, as works on site will still be in progress.

Tuesday 1 OctoberWednesday 2 October: Road surfacing and road marking works will take place over night. During the works, there will be four-way temporary lights in operation. The signals for the existing pedestrian crossing on Bell Lane (east of the roundabout) will be switched off and a temporary crossing will be in place.

If you need vehicle access, please discuss this with the team on site. Please bear in mind, there will be delays whilst the area is made safe and your vehicle is escorted by site marshals. Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.

Information for residents and businesses

Public Transport: Alternative bus stops will be provided in Bell Lane. Signage will be in place to direct members of the public.

Parking: We will put out ‘no parking’ signs and cones on the site to advise where parking is restricted. Please avoid parking in these locations as it will delay our works.

Weather: All of these works are subject to favourable weather conditions, for example heavy rain may affect the progress of the works.

Properties close to the carriageway may experience a temporary disturbance as this can be a noisy process and those properties may experience flashing lights and reversing sirens.

Permit Reference: EA005IM-0036-02 & EA005IM-0036-1-03.

We would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience or disruption this work may cause, however this forms part of our continuing improvement for the East Sussex highway network.

Please let us know how we did by leaving feedback. Please note you will be redirected to the East Sussex County Council consultation website.
