Map of works areas
**UPDATE**
We are working in partnership with Wealden District Council and Alfriston Parish Council to lower speed limits in Alfriston and change the waiting restrictions on C39 High Street. These changes follow the consultation held during August and September 2024.
When did the works start?
Work started on Monday 2 June and continue until Saturday 14 June 2025.
What are we doing?
The work includes updating road signage, refreshing road markings, lowering the speed limit and adding buff coloured high-friction surfacing (HFS) to raise awareness of the change in environment.
The changes include:
- Village-wide 20mph speed limit including new gateway signs
- 30mph buffer limits on the north and southbound approaches
- Adjustment of the 40mph speed limit extent to the south of the village
- No waiting at any time (double yellow lines) outside the Star Public House on the High Street to improve traffic flow
How will this impact highway users?
This week (Monday 9 June to Friday 13 June)
Our signage team will be replacing existing traffic signs with new signs on the main road through Alfriston under two-way temporary traffic lights in the vicinity of sites 1 and 2 shown on the map. These works will take place between 8pm to 6am.
During the day, under localised traffic management (signs, barriers and cones), we will also be changing the existing 30mph signs to 20mph signs in the below locations. Work on The Furlongs will be restricted to outside of school drop off and pick up times.
- Deans Road
- Kings Ride
- The Broadway
- Weavers Lane
- The Furlongs
Thursday 12 June
We’ll be working under two-way temporary traffic lights to install the high friction surfacing (HFS) at either end of the village. The works will take approximately an hour at each site. The team will start with the site that is on North Street south of Lullington Road junction (site 1). The team will then move onto the site on Whiteway south of The Alfriston Hotel at Deans Place (site 2). Works will be restricted between 9:30am and 2:30pm to minimise disruption to commuter and school traffic.
Road marking installation and renewal will follow between 8pm to 6am under a rolling road closure on the main road through Alfriston that will start in the north (at site 1) moving through the village (towards site 2).
Friday 13 June 2025
Road marking installation and renewal will be completed between 8pm to 6am under a rolling road closure finishing up in the south of the village (at site 2).
For safety, it will not be possible for any vehicles to drive through the closure where the road marking team are working. They will move on as soon as an area is complete. Residents will be able to access Alfriston from the north of the village.
Information for residents and businesses
Parking: We will put out ‘no parking’ signs and cones on the site to advise where parking is restricted. Please avoid parking in these locations as it will delay our works.
Weather: All of these works are subject to favourable weather conditions, for example heavy rain may affect the progress of the works.
Properties close to the carriageway may experience a temporary disturbance as this can be a noisy process and those properties may experience flashing lights and reversing sirens. Thank you to residents and businesses for the patience during these improvement works.
We would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience or disruption this work may cause, however this forms part of our continuing improvement for the East Sussex highway network. Should you have any concerns regarding these works, you can contact us at eshcomms@balfourbeatty.com.
Please let us know how we did by leaving feedback. Please note you will be redirected to the East Sussex County Council consultation website.
