Balfour Beatty is working in partnership with East Sussex County Council to manage the highways service across East Sussex. As part of this, we will be carrying out carriageway repairs on the A268 Rye Road, Playden & Rye Hill, Rye ahead of next year’s surface dressing programme.
When do they start?
Works will be carried out from Thursday 18 September to Sunday 28 September 2025 between 7pm to 6am. We will inform you of any changes to the dates or times via advanced warning signs on site.
Please be aware, similar work will be taking place on A268 Barnets Hill, Peasmarsh. One road will be closed at a time with no overlap to minimise disruption.
What are we doing?
These works involve targeted patch repairs to the carriageway, as well as re-setting and replacing drainage covers. Road markings will also be replaced.
How will this impact highway users?
We will be working in the below phases:
- Rye Road, Playden – We will be working between the junctions of the B2082 and New England Lane from Thursday 18 September to Thursday 25 September.
- Rye Hill, Rye – We will be working between the junction of New England Lane and Military Road from Monday 22 September to Sunday 28 September.
Please be assured that the locations mentioned will not be closed at the same time. While the permits for these closures do overlap, this is simply to allow flexibility in case of weather-related delays.
Access will be restricted to residents while we are working, with traffic diverted via the A268, A259, A2101, A21, A28, A268 and vice versa.
For access, please approach the closure point and speak to the site team. This is for access only and there will be no through route. There may be a short delay while we make it safe for you to pass, and your vehicle will be escorted by site marshals. Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.
Information for residents and businesses
Parking: If required, we will put out ‘no parking’ signs and cones on the site to advise where parking is restricted. Please avoid parking in these locations as it will delay our works.
Public Transport: Local bus services have been informed of these works and will be diverted.
Weather: All of these works are subject to favourable weather conditions, for example heavy rain may affect the progress of the works.
Properties close to the carriageway may experience a temporary disturbance as this can be a noisy process and those properties may experience flashing lights and reversing sirens.
We would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience or disruption this work may cause, however this forms part of our continuing improvement for the East Sussex highway network. Should you have any concerns regarding these works, you can contact us at eshcomms@balfourbeatty.com.
Please let us know how we did by leaving feedback. Please note you will be redirected to the East Sussex County Council consultation website.
