Map of works area and diversion route

Balfour Beatty is working in partnership with East Sussex County Council to manage the highways service across East Sussex. As part of this, we will be carrying out carriageway resurfacing on the A259 Bexhill Road, St. Leonards.

When do they start?

Works will be carried out on Monday 13 April to Friday 15 May 2026. We will inform you of any changes to the dates or times via advanced warning signs on site.

What are we doing?

The works will include repairing damaged areas of the road, resurfacing to improve its condition, and applying high friction surfacing (HFS) to improve skid resistance. We will also carry out associated civil works, make adjustments to ironwork where needed, and install new road markings to clearly define the road for all motorists.

How will this impact highway users?

We will be working between property number 199 Bexhill Road and the Esso garage. To minimise disruption and ensure the works can be carried out safely and efficiently, the scheme will involve a combination of daytime and overnight working, each with different traffic management arrangements.

7am-7pm (daytime): The road will remain open with temporary traffic lights in place.

7pm- 7am (overnight): Access will be restricted to residents while we are working, with traffic diverted via the A2036, the A2691, the A2690, the A21 & vice versa. Please note there will be deep excavations in the carriageway so there may be periods where vehicular access is not possible

There will also be traffic lights on Harley Shute Road to maintain the volume of traffic on Bexhill Road.

Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.

Information for residents and businesses

Parking: If required, we will put out ‘no parking’ signs and cones on the site to advise where parking is restricted. Please avoid parking in these locations as it will delay our works.

Weather: All of these works are subject to favourable weather conditions, for example heavy rain may affect the progress of the works.

Properties close to the carriageway may experience a temporary disturbance as this can be a noisy process and those properties may experience flashing lights and reversing sirens.

We would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience or disruption this work may cause, however this forms part of our continuing improvement for the East Sussex highway network. Should you have any concerns regarding these works, you can contact us at eshcomms@balfourbeatty.com.

Please let us know how we did by leaving feedback. Please note you will be redirected to the East Sussex County Council consultation website.
