We’ll soon be returning to the A21 Sedlescombe Road North to carrying out drainage and embankment works.
Following significant rainfall in the winter and spring and hot, dry summer spells work is needed to stabilise the embankment and protect against further ground movement.
Drainage measures will also be installed at the top of the embankment to better manage surface and groundwater to reduce the risk of future issues.
This work will helpprotect the long-term safety, resilience and reliability of the road. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption while the works are carried out, and we are committed to keeping the community informed throughout the project.
When do they start?
Work will be carried out from Monday 5 October 2026 to Friday 30 October 2026.
There are no plans for weekend working during these dates. We will inform you of any changes to the dates or times via advanced warning signs on site.
What are we doing?
These works involve excavating and reshaping section of the embankment to the West of the A21. We’ll also be installing additional drainage to improve water flow in the area.
How will this impact highway users?
Works will take place across four phases:
- Monday 5 October to Friday 16 October, 8pm to 6am: Overnight works will take place at the Whitworth Road junction of Sedlescombe Road North. Temporary traffic lights will be in operation on Whitworth Road and the A21 during working hours.
- Monday 19 October to Wednesday 21 October: Daytime drainage works will be carried out. No traffic management will be needed during this phase to minimise disruption and as the works will be carried out on top of the embankment without the need for excavation.
- Thursday 22 October to Friday 23 October: Works will take place during both the day and overnight. Temporary traffic lights will be in operation overnight between 8pm and 6am.
- Monday 26 October to Friday 30 October, 8pm to 6am: Final overnight works will be completed with temporary traffic lights in operation during working hours.
A section of Junction Road will be fenced off while the work is carried out but can still be accessed by pedestrians and cyclists.
Please be polite and respectful to the site teams, they are working to keep everyone safe.
Information for residents and businesses
Parking: If required, we will put out ‘no parking’ signs and cones on the site to advise where parking is restricted. Please avoid parking in these locations as it will delay our works.
Weather: All of these works are subject to favourable weather conditions, for example heavy rain may affect the progress of the works.
Properties close to the carriageway may experience a temporary disturbance as this can be a noisy process and those properties may experience flashing lights and reversing sirens.
